Sufficient Grace

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Let’s meditate on God’s sufficient grace.

Many understand grace only from the position of salvation and many choose to reside and make a permanent dwelling on salvation grace. The truth is that we have been saved by grace as Ephesians 2:8-9 clearly states that “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Even though we have been saved by grace, it does not end there. James 4:6 teaches us that God gives more grace. But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”

So there is a reality where we can access more grace and not just operate on the grace we received when we accepted Christ as our Lord and Saviour. Our lives should not be stagnant on one dimension but we should be pilgrims in God, journeying and growing in our relationship with God.

  • Psalms 84:6-8

6 As they pass through the Valley of Baca,

They make it a spring;

The rain also covers it with pools.

7 They go from strength to strength;

Each one appears before God in Zion.

8 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;

Give ear, O God of Jacob! Selah

What we learn from the preceding scripture is that we should not be stagnant as believers, but we must journey from strength to strength, and likewise with grace, we must journey from salvation grace to more grace.

  • John 1:14-16

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”

16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

There is a reality where we can be full of grace and receive grace upon grace.

Grace is more than just unmerited favour, but Grace is God freely extended to give Himself away to people and we see that in John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

To gain an understanding of grace, we need to see it from this perspective that God gave of Himself in order to be one with us. When we accept Christ as our Lord, we accept His grace which is the unmerited favour, but more than that we accept grace in the form of God dwelling and living in us which then shapes our understanding of seeing God as grace the same way we see God as love. So God and grace are not separate entities but they are one because grace is a Spirit as we learn from Zechariah 12:10 and Hebrews 10:29.

So when God says to Paul “My grace is sufficient for you” He is basically saying I have given you Myself and I am enough for you, I am all that you need to be content and satisfied, in you I am the unfailing strength.

As we journey in life, let us rest in the sufficiency of God’s grace. Let’s meditate on this issue this week and next week when we have our cell we will engage on grace in a more practical sense and we will draw insight from the life of Joseph and Jacob.

Have a blessed week.
